I went to Bravo Trattoria at Crows Nest on Saturday to celebrate my friend Sammy’s birthday. The two-level restaurant had a typical Italian restaurant atmosphere – perfect for couples, families and large groups.
Peter and I ordered a classic meatball pasta dish – Spaghetti Polpette and Linguine Frutti di Mare, a seafood pasta. The servings were generous and they provided a good amount of fresh seafood. I also tasted some of the entrées that we shared as a group – Calamari Fritti and a traditional Garlic Pizza.
Sammy’s girlfriend organised a cake for him all the way from Darwin- she is currently there working at the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA). But as the restaurant had its own gelateria, we were unable to cut the cake at their premises.
The group came up with Plan B to surprise Sammy with the cake and convinced him to drop by at my place where we surprised him with ‘Bombe Alaska’ gelato cake from Gelato Messina.
As the cake is finished with an Italian meringue, it looked more like a hedgehog. Underneath its shell, there were two layers of gelato – raspberry sorbet & chocolate fondant with bits of chocolate sponge cake towards the bottom. The flavours worked well together with a bit of sweet and sour happening.
Happy birthday again Sammy!
